Today in 1799 British prime minister William Pitt the Younger introduced income tax, at two shillings (10p) in the pound, to raise funds for the Napoleonic Wars.Pitt the Younger was so called to distinguish him from his father who had also been Prime Minister. Pitt the younger was just 24 when he became Prime Minister.
